Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
