Cameron Norrie earned the most important win of his career by rebounding from a lost first set to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Even though he had before overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win signifies Norrie's first ever victory over a sitting world No 1.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who becomes the newest UK male player in the record books to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the closing months of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the greatest victory of my career, my maiden triumph over the global number one and probably the strongest player in the world right now."

The British player, seeded 31st in the world, also ended Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 successes, which represented the top run of performances in the Spaniard's young professional path.

Contest Analysis

The top seed appeared to be advancing smoothly to success in the beginning as he cruised through the initial stanza. However, Norrie slowly fought his way into contention by delivering with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into extended, physical points. His persistent steadiness and dependability steadily made an impact.

For much of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The young star looked particularly uncomfortable executing his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the sport for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, the British player gave his opponent minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, fitness and depth the entire contest while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to advance forward and attack well.
