A Danish man has been convicted of sharing nude scenes from protected films and television shows on the social media platform Reddit.

Based on a law enforcement document obtained by media outlets, the unnamed individual posted 347 video excerpts of nude scenes in a Reddit group he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million-plus times.

Danish authorities state he has been given a seven-month deferred jail term for violating copyright laws.

Experts explain the man was charged under a rarely-used provision in Denmark's intellectual property legislation, with the court finding that by removing the footage out of their intended setting, the accused had harmed the artists' "ethical entitlements".

He has also been convicted of sharing more than 25 TB of protected data.

From spring 2022 to mid-2023, the man using the alias "KlammereFyr" on Reddit uploaded sexually explicit clips featuring over 100 female performers.

He shared them in the subreddit he was a administrator of.

Per the Danish copyright protection organization The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 subscribers and users were prompted to ask for clips of specific actors.

In last year, advocates filed the incident to the authorities on behalf of the impacted actors, filmmakers and producers, which resulted in the subreddit being closed down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, among the performers whose explicit content were shared in the group, told local media at the period she believed there was a distinction between being seen naked in a movie and appearing on Reddit.

The performer stated the uploads amounted to "abuse".

'A significant signal'

The defendant was detained in September 2024 and admitted guilty to the allegations last month.

In a statement following the ruling, the head of the Rights Alliance the organization's leader remarked the outcome sent an "important" signal "that violations of creators' rights have repercussions".

The verdict is considered unprecedented in Denmark for its application of the "ethical protections" clause of the Danish Copyright Act, which states an creator's work cannot be used in a way which infringes upon their standing.

Intellectual property specialist a legal scholar told BBC News the legal matter was "unusual" for its emphasis on the damage to the integrity of an performer, rather than to them financially.

How the ruling could influence nations abroad is unclear.

But she said there may be "an increasing number of these actions" in the future with the growth of AI, where "the integrity of an individual's work might be compromised with greater ease".
