Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team might be designing a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
