The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
